How can I be sure it’s spring? The moose are browsing out in front of the house on the hay flats, two trumpeter swans flew over my head a few days ago, and I have even had the sunroof on my car open a few times.

Our local real estate market is moving at about the same pace as last year. According to the Alaska MLS, there are 633 homes for sale in the core area; there are 199 that have accepted offers on them; there have been 170 that have sold since January 1^st. That compares to 167 that had sold by this time last year. The median sale price this year is $202,750.00, and the average number of days on the market is 94. The $8,000.00 tax credit is still available to those who qualify for contracts accepted by April 30^th, 2010 and closed by June 30^th, 2010. Interest rates may be on the rise, according to the experts surveyed on bankrate.com; 75% believe they will rise in the next week or so, 6% believe they are going down, and 19% believe they will remain the same.

The draft environmental impact statement for the Port MacKenzie rail extension has been posted. Information can be viewed at http://www.portmacrail.com. The Goose Creek Correctional Center is under construction and is 35% done. This is a 240 million, 1536 bed facility. This gated facility sits on 330 acres approximately nine miles from the Port. This is one of the largest vertical construction projects that have ever taken place in Alaska; it will provide hundreds of jobs. Speaking of jobs, we need more of them. I believe now is the time to build the Knik Arm Bridge. You can only study things for so long, then it’s time to move forward.
